Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop at Kisumu Campus, equipping researchers and postgraduate supervisors with key competencies in modern research practice. The training facilitated by VLIR-IUC Project under Subproject 1 provided sessions that introduced practical skills and responsible integration of Artificial Intelligence across the research lifecycle—from literature reviews and grant development to Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA). Participants were trained on a structured two-pass data interrogation workflow, effective prompt engineering, and rigorous output validation, underscoring that while AI accelerates research tasks, human judgment remains indispensable for ethical accountability and scientific reasoning.
The training also highlighted sustainable pathways for translating academic discoveries into tangible societal and economic value. The workshop provided sessions that addressed the entrepreneurial university model, detailing how researchers can leverage institutional mechanisms, patent frameworks, and industry collaborations to protect intellectual property and commercialize innovations. The session also emphasized that embedding Monitoring and Evaluation from concept formulation through implementation ensures verifiable evidence, tracks milestones, and bridges the gap between academic outputs and measurable community impact.
Overall, the workshop reinforced a culture of scientific rigor, evidence-based accountability, and innovation across the university ecosystem. By mastering structured data preparation, proactive technology transfer, and transparent AI adoption, JOOUST researchers are better positioned to conduct high-quality, reproducible science that moves seamlessly from institutional laboratories into real-world applications.
