JOOUST VLIR-IUC PROJECT

Overview

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) is implementing a ten-year (2022-2032) research grant from VLIR-UOS on Institutional University Cooperation (IUC), in collaboration with five Flemish Universities namely Vrije Universiteit Brussel, KU Leuven, Ghent University, and University of Antwerp.
The Project aims at strengthening JOOUST’s capacity in natural resource management, food security and health. Through field data collection, laboratory analysis, and community action research, the Project continues to integrate qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis to solve problems related to natural resource management, agri-food systems, health systems, ICT and climate change. The field study component of the Project involves a wide range of partners, stakeholders, and communities and implemented within nine counties in the Lake Victoria Basin as transects. Three transects have been identified for this Project, the Northern transect (Trans Nzoia, Busia, Kakamega, and Siaya counties); the Central transect (Kericho and Kisumu counties); and the Southern transect (Homa Bay, Nyamira, and Migori counties).

Profile

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) and VLIR-UOS collaboration was initiated through a proposal submitted to VLIR-UOS on 15th October, 2019 for funding consideration. Upon review, JOOUST was among five (5) Universities approved to host Institutional University Cooperation (IUC) 2022 programme. This will be a long-term (12 years) institutional cooperation project between JOOUST and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The Programme will promote sustainable (inter-institutional) global partnerships and cooperation aimed at empowering JOOUST in its mission and more in particular to better fulfil its role as development actor in the society.

The partnership with VUB will strengthen capacity building, research and outreach in five strategic areas, namely: natural resource management, agriculture and food security, human health, ICT and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
