As part of its commitment to enhancing food security and sustainability in the Lake Victoria Basin, the JOOUST VLIR-IUC Subproject 2 — Building Capacity for Transformative Agri-food Systems for Resilience — in partnership with AVEPO Agrovets, successfully hosted a vibrant field day on June 10, 2025, under the theme: “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future.”
The event, held in Siaya County, brought together a wide range of stakeholders including university staff, agriculture officials from the County Government of Siaya, local farmers, students, and agricultural input and service providers. This gathering provided an important platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and showcasing innovative agricultural practices aimed at strengthening local agri-food systems.
Participants were treated to practical demonstrations on climate-smart farming, sustainable soil and water management, use of certified seeds, and appropriate use of agro-inputs. Service providers and agrovets showcased a variety of products and technologies aimed at improving yields and reducing post-harvest losses.
The event also focused on raising awareness of the right to food as a fundamental human right, urging both local communities and policymakers to take proactive steps in creating enabling environments for farmers, particularly women and youth, to thrive in agricultural enterprises.
As a practical and participatory platform, the field day embodied the essence of JOOUST VLIR-IUC’s mission of subproject 2: to build capacity, promote sustainability, and ensure inclusive development across the Lake Victoria Basin.
